Where there is a will, there is a way!
You can learn Chinese by yourself. I have seen many foreigners doing that.
I suggest you to start your self-learning Mandarin Chinese journey with pinyin. Pay attentions to the sounds like Zi, and Zhi; Si, Shi, Xi, etc.
Try to learn about 100 frequently used Chinese characters. This can be done within a couple of weeks.
In the beginning, maybe focus more on reading and listening/speaking. It’s ok to put writing in the back seat.
Once you know ~100 characters, and about 500 related words, you can further extend your Mandarin knowledge by learning new concepts, such as Chinese poems, idioms, and fables.

- Chinese History Books (HSK All Levels)
- Biography (Most Famous People in Chinese History)
- Books to Learn Chinese Geography (HSK All Levels)
Try to read as many Chinese stories you can read. It will give you lots of confidence to get going on your language endeavors.
Learning Mandarin will take a while, but the journey will be interesting.
